Campus Sustainability

Virtually all of the best sources on campus sustainability are on the web. This section of our library provides a few book recommendations, but focuses on campus sustainability links.

Books

Sarah Hammond Creighton, Greening the Ivory Tower, MIT Press, 1998. - Creighton's book is the most comprehensive and, unfortunately, the most recent book to cover a wide range of campus sustainability issues from buildings, grounds and labs to purchasing, dining and offices. Although the book is slightly dated now, it is a helpful introduction and general reference.

Kevin Lyons, Buying for the Future: Contract Management and the Environmental Challenge, Stylus Publishing, 2000. - Written by the director of purchasing for Rutgers University, this book gives many helpful tips for purchasers, and it is especially good at describing the often complicated details of purchasing for non-purchasers. If you're interested in making change in your campus' purchasing practices, this book provides an excellent starting point for understanding theissues, especially if you're at a public institution.

Web sites

National Wildlife Federation's Campus Ecology program http://nwf.org/campusecology provides a wide range of excellent resources on campus environmental issues. NWF runs occasional web-based "teach-ins" on hot topics such as environmental purchasing. The case studies on the web site are especially helpful as suggestions for action.

University Leaders for a Sustainable Future http://www.ulsf.org assists colleges and universities in making sustainability an integral part of curriculum, research, operations and outreach. ULSF is also the secretariat for signatories of the Talloires Declaration (1990), which has been signed by more than 290 university presidents and chancellors around the world.

The Campus Consortium for Environmental Excellence (C2E2) http://esf.uvm.edu/c2e2/ is a group of 20 colleges and universities nationwide developing new ways of managing and regulating the environmental impacts of laboratories. It serves as a forum for professional networking on environmental safety issues and is building a library of articles of interest to environmental health and safety managers in higher education on its web site.
